Access to life-saving medical care should not depend on income, geography, or circumstance. Yet across Liberia, families are forced to make heartbreaking decisions when urgent medical needs arise. Limited infrastructure, financial hardship, and delayed access to treatment often result in preventable suffering.
Conditions that could be treated with proper intervention too often become life-threatening.

1989
Civil War
Fourteen years of conflict destroyed most of Liberia’s health infrastructure. Roughly 80% of clinics were shut down or looted, and thousands of health professionals fled or were killed. By the end of the war, the number of functioning hospitals and trained medical staff had collapsed.
2003
Post War Recovery
After peace was restored, rebuilding focused mainly on primary care, leaving supply chains, training, and health governance underdeveloped. Chronic underfunding and reliance on international donors made progress fragile and uneven across the country.
2014
Ebola Outbreak
The Ebola epidemic further devastated the system. More than 10,000 people were infected and nearly half died, including many healthcare workers. Routine medical services—like childbirth, immunizations, and treatment for chronic illnesses—were disrupted, causing even more preventable deaths.
2025
Ongoing Challenges
The COVID-19 pandemic, combined with donor instability, exposed how vulnerable Liberia’s system remains. Rural communities face the worst conditions, with little access to hospitals or emergency transport. Dependence on international funding continues to threaten long-term stability.
